La Celestina, by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, is one of the most influential plays in the Spanish Golden Age. It takes place in Seville during the 15th century, and revolves around a poor woman who is forever unlucky in love. She falls asleep while waiting for her lover to come to her room and wakes up some years later to find that he has stolen everything she has. Soon after it becomes apparent that she will never be able to win him back with conventional methods, but luckily for her she falls into a magical world where anything can happen. This blog post discusses why La Celestina is considered one of the most important plays in 17th century Spain, its beauty and power over its audience even today. It also reveals why La Celestina is often seen as a feminist play and how the text is full of heteronormative assumptions and dated ideas. La Celestina, by Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1567) is a Spanish narrative and legal comedy and one of the most influential plays in the Spanish Golden Age. It was first performed on 30 January 1601 at the Real Colegio de dudes, which is now the Real Academia Española. The title "Celestina" refers to a female person who is a virgin, celibate or a nun. In the play, the Celestina refers to a woman who is poor and can no longer marry because of how unlucky she has been in love. The play's plot revolves around this poor woman's struggle of winning her lover back from his obsession with his possessions. This obsession begins with him stealing her petticoat for some unknown reason and ends with him being sentenced to death by being burnt alive for his crimes. This whole process occurs in just four acts of the play. It is best known for its depiction of a strong female character who pursues a cruel and violent sensual love, a woman more interested in her own sensual pleasure than the welfare of her lover. This play led to a change of morality concerning women and their position in society. This play had a large influence on the Spanish Golden Age period and set the standard for other works to follow after it. Many authors used this play as their source material to base their own works off of, such as Lope de Vega's tragicomedia sensitive Amadillo, which is based on La Celestina. Even more recently, Shakespeare used Calderón's work to help him create his Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare's family also had connections with the Spanish court, which is why his plays were performed there. La Celestina  is the story of Calisto, a young man who falls in love with a poor woman named Melibea, who is represented as pure and chaste. The two eventually become lovers, but Melibea refuses to give in to her sensual desires until she is married to Calisto. After he steal her petticoat at the beginning of the play for an unknown reason, he is taken away by his father and leaves her behind. She does not know what reason he has for leaving her though, so she begins making plans for their wedding. cfa1e77820
